For architects who need polished visuals for client presentations, competition boards, and marketing materials, Firefly offers something genuinely practical: AI generation with commercial rights built in, accessible from tools you already know.

This guide covers how to use Adobe Firefly effectively across real architectural workflows, where it outperforms standalone generators like Midjourney, and where its limitations will catch you off guard.


What Adobe Firefly Actually Is

Adobe Firefly is a family of generative AI models integrated across the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Unlike standalone image generators, Firefly works both as a web application and as embedded features within Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Adobe Express.

  • Firefly’s architectural imagery tends toward generic, stock-photo quality. It lacks the striking compositional sense that Midjourney produces for architectural scenes.
  • Complex spatial descriptions (“double-height atrium with a mezzanine overlooking a sunken garden”) often produce images that misinterpret the spatial relationships.
  • Interior scenes frequently have furniture and proportions that feel off - useful for mood, not for spatial accuracy.

Structure Reference partially addresses the compositional weakness. You can upload a sketch, massing model screenshot, or reference photo, and Firefly will use its layout as a structural guide while generating new content. A practical competition board workflow using Firefly:

In Photoshop: Take your base renders from your visualization tool. Use Generative Fill to add atmosphere - people, landscaping, sky conditions, and contextual buildings. Use Generative Expand if you need to extend the image to fit your board layout. Clean up any rendering artifacts or unwanted elements.

In Illustrator: Use Generative Recolor to create diagram variants. If you have a site plan with a specific colour scheme and the jury brief calls for a different palette, Generative Recolor can remap your entire vector artwork to match. Use Text Effects to add material textures to diagram titles or section headers if your graphic language calls for it.

Material palette boards. Generate close-up material images that match your specification. If you are proposing a specific shade of brick that you cannot find a good photograph of, prompt Firefly for it. Firefly vs Midjourney for Architecture Work

Both tools have a place in architectural workflows, and the right choice depends on what you are producing.

Choose Firefly when:

The honest comparison: Midjourney produces more impressive architectural images. Firefly produces more useful ones for day-to-day practice work. Midjourney is better at generating a competition-winning hero render. Firefly is better at making your existing renders and photos look polished for a presentation.

Many practices use both. Midjourney for early-stage concept exploration and hero imagery, Firefly for production-stage editing, compositing, and deliverable preparation.


Limitations and Pitfalls to Know

Firefly is useful, but it has clear limitations that architects should understand before relying on it.

Quality ceiling. Firefly’s image quality is noticeably below Midjourney and the latest Stable Diffusion models for photorealistic scenes. Architectural interiors and complex urban scenes often look flat or generic. Adobe is improving this with each model version, but the gap remains as of early 2026.

Prompt sensitivity. Firefly interprets architectural prompts differently from Midjourney. Descriptions that produce excellent results in Midjourney often need to be rephrased for Firefly. Expect a learning curve as you develop prompts that work with Firefly’s model.

Generative credits. Adobe allocates a monthly budget of “generative credits” to Creative Cloud subscribers. Each Firefly operation consumes credits. Heavy use - generating dozens of textures and running multiple Generative Fill operations per day - can exhaust your monthly allocation. Additional credits can be purchased, but this is an ongoing cost to track.

Consistency across multiple outputs. Generating a series of images with a consistent architectural style is still difficult. Style Reference and Structure Reference help, but producing a set of 10 images that look like they belong to the same project requires significant prompt iteration.

No 3D awareness. Firefly does not understand three-dimensional space. It generates images, not spatial compositions. The buildings it produces often have inconsistent perspectives, impossible structural configurations, and spaces that do not work architecturally. Never present AI-generated spatial imagery as if it represents a real design proposal.

Metadata and transparency. All Firefly outputs include Content Credentials (metadata indicating AI generation). This is good for transparency but means you cannot pass off generated images as photographs. For planning submissions or legal documentation, this distinction matters.


Best Practices for Architects Using Firefly

Start with Generative Fill, not text-to-image. The most immediate productivity gains come from editing existing images - your renders, your site photos, your diagrams. Text-to-image is useful but has a steeper learning curve for architectural applications.

Layer your AI edits. Always work on separate layers when using Generative Fill. This lets you adjust, mask, or remove AI-generated content without affecting the original image. If a Generative Fill result is 80% good, you can manually refine the remaining 20% on its own layer.

Use Structure Reference for consistency. When generating multiple concept images for the same project, use the same reference image (a sketch, a massing model, or a key view) as a Structure Reference. This produces outputs that share compositional DNA even if the generated content varies.

Combine with traditional techniques. The best results come from using Firefly as one step in a multi-step process. Generate a base with AI, then refine with manual Photoshop work - adjusting colour balance, adding specific entourage from your library, correcting proportions, and compositing with real project imagery.

Keep your originals. Always preserve your unedited base images. AI tools evolve quickly, and you may want to re-process older images with improved Firefly models as they are released.
